Arab Village in Palembang

There are many interesting places in Palembang. Also, Palembang has many ethnics and cultures in its community. One of them is Arab community, live in the big place, named Arab village (Kampung Arab). Most of people in Arab village are people from Arab. They get married with Palembang people and stay in Palembang. For one thing, Arab village is located along the Musi river. Not only in upstream of Musi river, but also in downstream of Musi river. The address of this village is in Lorong Asia and Sungai Bayas village, Kelurahan Kotabatu, Kecamatan Ilir Timur 1, Lorong Sungai Lumpur Kelurahan 13 Ulu, then Lorong BBC Kelurahan 12 Ulu, Lorong Almunawar Kelurahan 13 Ulu, Lorong Al-Hadad, Lorong Al-Habsy and Lorong Al-Kaaf Kelurahan 14 Ulu, and Assegaf Complex Kelurahan 16 Ulu. For another thing, the shape of the house in Arab village is same as Palembang house generally. The shape of the houses tend to follow the shape of the house such as stilt houses and Indies houses which was developed at that time.

Those houses surround a large yard and face to Musi river. Last of all, the culture of people in Arab village is about the marriage. In their culture, a woman who is descendant of Arabic is not allowed to married with Palembang man. But a woman who is descendant of Arabic is allowed to married with Palembang woman. People in Arab village think that woman who married to Palembang man is a disgrance, because they think that man still has descendant blood from Rasulullah (Muhammad prophet), while woman don’t. That’s why, if descendant Arabic woman married to Palembang man, line of descendant from that Rasulullah will stop only from the woman, because Palembang man doesn’t has descendant blood from Rasulullah.
